The Chief Joseph design was created in the 1920s and remains one of Pendleton's most popular blankets. Chief Joseph was one of the greatest warrior heroes of the Nez Perce, and this design commemorates that. In Nez Perce he was known as "Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kert," which translates to Thunder Rolling Down Hill. The Nez Perce were reknowned for their warrior skills, Appaloosa horse breeding, peace efforts with the US government, and the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery.
